CPS Failure Strikes House of TORQ?!?!
by MDFDWarrior 09-24-2007, 11:56 AM

On our way back on the expressway from the Route 2 tour yesterday I experienced what felt like a certain "miss" of the engine or "retardation" of the ignition. The Warrior ran solid all day long. But on our wayback at a steady 80 mph at 3k rom, I rolled on the throttle just like I do regularly and felt the symptoms. It felt like I hit the rev limiter, only I didn't b/c I was only around 3k rpm...It was so noticeable that when it bogged down I thought I had a flat in my rear tire. That's when I asked Rice to check out my rear tire when we were cruising on I88. Rice and Vlad may have noticed that when I was out front on I88 on our way back, I accelerated and then all the sudden slowed down. That wasn't intentional. That was when the symptoms struck!

I did some research and this seems suspiciously like the symptoms before a CPS failure. I coincidentally ordered a cps recall kit from the dealer and have it sitting in my garage. Since I already have the new parts, I will be tackling this sick job myself...
Although the CPS failure has been know to strike at any mileage, I have about 14.5k trouble free miles on my '02 so anyone nearing that be particularly aware! My recommendation is to just get it done for ease of mind and don't worry about being stranded!
Here are some pics of what is involved from the research I've done...

So it is your CPS.... I also see you got it apart already, that was quick. The dealer had it in stock?

nah Scott, those pics are actually from other members doing the work. I have yet to take mine apart. I had already bought a cps recall kit a couple of weeks ago just for good measure (and I got a good deal).

I suspect it is my CPS, but not 100% sure. Since it can be a pretty serious problem and leave one stranded, I figure I might as well do it since I already have the kit sitting in my garage. Best case, I fixed my problem. Worst case, I did some preventative maintenance....

I'll probably start taking it apart tonight or tomorrow. Hopefully everything will go smooth....

I thought when the CPS goes bad, the bike just dies out...... Or you still get some rought running before the bike stops working on you???

Vlad - it really depends and varies for people. I believe what I experienced are the start of the symptoms. Perhaps a wire that is about to break or the plastic tab holding the sensor becoming brittle and cracked. However, once it goes, then you are correct - you are basically stranded until you get a new one put on.
I will know for sure when I pull the clutch cover off. Not really looking forward to getting all messy again, but it's good preventative maintenance. For all of you Warrior owners, if you won't get it done by the dealer, then spend the $30+ bucks and get yourself a CPS recall kit so that you are not only stranded, but so you won't have the downtime ordering one(either doing it yourself or by the dealer) WHEN (not if) it happens. I'm not taking any chances with mine....
