Vehicle tax question?

It's been a while since I did this, so I'll ask you folks who know better....
If I were to buy a bike from out of state and register it back home here in Will County, what would the tax rate be? Any other DMV fees to be aware of? How much are plate, sticker & registration fees?

I've never bought a vehicle out of state, but when I bought my car and bike out of county from dealers, they charged my home county's tax, plus cook county (where I purchased) charged 1%.

For a used bike, I paid the tax when I registered it at the DMV.

thanx for the replies guys. I guess I'm trying to figure out if it costs the same, more, or less for taxes if I buy out of state and register on my own vs. buying in-state?

If the price of the bike is less than 15,000.00 then the tax will be 25.00 more than 15 k it goes up to about 750.00.
I just got my Vision last month from a private party near miami and thats what it cost me. If your buying from a dealer things are different so if thats the case ask them.

that's exactly the type of info I was looking for - thanx! Now does it matter if the vehicle is new or used for this? I might be buying new from an out of state dealer and want to make sure I don't end up paying more in fees than if I bought from an in-state dealer....

Thom, they look at the age of the vehicle for thier taxing. After a set
amount of years old, it becomes cheaper, regardless of how much u pay for it.

Say I was to sell my 1969 chevelle "SS" for 40k. They would charge the person who bought it the bare minimum to do title, tax and plate transfer.

Call the currency exchange closest to you and tell them what u r looking to buy with year model and title Info and they should be able to give u an exact price on doing it all.

I know used bikes are a low flat fee. Not sure on how New ones work. You can also ask the dealer where you want to buy. I'm sure UKE's HD deals with this all the time, you could also call them and ask.

Thom - gotchurback on this one...

$25 Flat fee on motorcycles. (believe this may only be specific to used/private party sales).

IL Tax form RUT-50. (attached) It's from 2008, but I'm pretty sure it has not changed.

EDIT/add: I've bought my last two bikes from WI... that's why I have the form...

Also... wealth of info here (have to dig a bit)

The Official Web site for Illinois Secretary of State Jesse White

I'm 99% sure that tax, title, and License fees come to something close to $150. BUT that's with vanity plates. "Regular" MCY plates are less.
